History
Prairie Art Alliance began in 1979 as an artists' support group called the Women's Art Alliance. The purpose of the organization was to encourage and promote area artists by providing exhibition opportunities, workshops, and artistic development. The Alliance incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1985. In 1995 the name was changed to Prairie Art Alliance to reflect the admission of male artists and Associate Members. In 1996 the Gallery and Classroom facility opened at 807 North 5th Street, adjacent to the Springfield Art Association, just north of downtown Springfield, Illinois.

In January of 2004, the Prairie Art Alliance moved into the Springfield Center for the Arts at 420 S. Sixth Street. In March of 2010, the extension of Gallery II opening closet to the heart of downtown.  However, in December of 2013 the Prairie Art Alliance closed Gallery II to allow the organization to put more focus on outreach projects and artist support.  PAA continues to offer new exhibit opportunities, community outreach to special needs groups, classes to the general public and support, and development of member artists.
